Black Grape – Marbles

Black grape, a British band formed from the remnants of the Happy Mondays, Shaun Ryder and Bez. Although this video is made up of a variety of animated styles, the live action shots of this music video, although heavily treated were shot and directed by Charlie Paul, who also created all of the text animation and band faces animation using a technique he is well known for. Using a large sheet of glass, he projects each frame of the live action he wishes to animate over, then covers the glass in Vaseline and uses various tools to move the Vaseline around on the glass. Once he is happy with an image he films the frame on another camera and repeats the process again and again. It is a different form of stop frame animation which he names ‘Vasovision’. All the other animation and visual treatment was created in Autodesk Discreet Flame by DazPix, including the 3d worlds that the video travels through, by going in and out of Shaun Ryders head…messy.
